Holiday decorating safety: Little tips that make a big difference

Decorations that can increase the risk of home fires: Christmas trees, candles, strings of lights.

The holiday season is easily my favorite time of year; it’s always so magical, stringing lights, lighting candles, and decorating a fresh tree. As cozy as decorating is, this season also brings a spike in fire-related emergencies, and nothing ruins a holiday faster than a preventable accident. Here are a few dos and don’ts to keep in mind as the holiday season begins.

Live vs. Artificial Trees

If you enjoy picking out a live Christmas tree, the most important rule is water, water, water. A dry tree can catch fire quickly and according to the NFPA, electrical malfunctions and dried-out branches are top contributors to tree fires. Check the tree stand daily to make sure it’s filled and keep the tree far away from heat sources like fireplaces.

When shopping for an artificial tree look for a label that says “fire-retardant” and check the wiring before plugging anything in. If you notice frayed cords or a loose bulb, make sure to replace them.

String Lights & Electrical Safety

It can be tempting to plug in just one more extension cord to light up all your holiday decorations, but the NFPA warns against overloading outlets and power strips. Before plugging anything in, inspect your light strips and toss any that are damaged. For outside lights, only use products labeled for exterior use, and keep cords out of water and walkways.

Candles & Fireplaces

Candles make any home feel more festive, but they’re responsible for nearly 1 in 5 decoration-related fires each December. A safer and equally as festive option are LED candles.

If you’re using your fireplace, get your chimney inspected yearly and keep anything flammable, including stockings, a safe distance away until the fire is completely out.

Keep the Magic, Skip the Hazards

Holiday decorating should feel joyful—not stressful. A few simple habits, like keeping trees watered, checking your lights, and unplugging decorations before bed, go a long way in keeping your home safe. The season moves quickly, but taking a moment to prioritize safety ensures you can enjoy every twinkly-light-filled moment without worry. After all, the best holiday memories are the ones made in a safe, cozy home.
