Out of tragedy, emerged a day that will be forever honored throughout history. On August 19th, 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 people, including the chief humanitarian in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello. In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly formalized the day as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).

Each year, World Humanitarian Day focuses on a theme that brings together partners from across the humanitarian system to advocate for the survival, well-being and dignity of people affected by crises and for the safety and security of aid workers.

This year’s World Humanitarian Day campaign commemorates 20 years since the attack at the United Nations Headquarters and unites humanitarians by a shared mission to save and protect lives. They will never compromise on the humanitarian principles, and always strive to make the best decisions for the people they serve. However, Humanitarian work is difficult and dangerous, but we don’t give up on our commitment to overcome the challenges and deliver life-saving assistance to people in need, #NoMatterWhat.

#NoMatterWhat, the American Red Cross also shows our unwavering commitment to the communities we serve by standing true to our mission, to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Through our strong network of volunteers, donors, and partners, we are always there in times of need.

The American Red Cross aspires to turn compassion into action so that all people affected by disasters across the country and around the world receive care, shelter and hope. We make sure our communities are ready and prepared for disasters; ensure that everyone in our country has access to safe, lifesaving blood products; help all members of our armed services and their families find support and comfort whenever needed; and train individuals in lifesaving skills like CPR and first aid.
