“Communication is key.” It’s a well-known phrase that persists because communication determines how information is delivered and perceived. When it comes to a nonprofit organization like the American Red Cross, the flow of communication to the public is crucial to meet its goals and fulfill its mission. This is demonstrated each time the Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to disasters. For the Southeastern Pennsylvania Red Cross region, this responsibility falls to the Communications department. Media relations, social media, website, blogging and photography for all lines of Red Cross service are handled by this team.

MEET THE TEAM

The Red Cross Communications team is led by staff members Dave Skutnik, regional communications director, and Alana Mauger, regional communications manager.

Skutnik dedicates his time and skills to the National Advanced Public Affairs Team (APAT) and has deployed during large disasters to help those affected. Before joining the Red Cross, he worked as an accomplished broadcast meteorologist for over 15 years.

Like Skutnik, Mauger is seasoned professional who has a background in news, communications and education. A fun fact about Mauger is she also handmakes one-of-a-kind jewelry. Combined, Skutnik and Mauger have been with the Red Cross for nearly 15 years.

Together, they lead a team of more than 50 writers/bloggers, photographers, media relations and digital volunteers.

The team’s Writers/Bloggers create engaging content for the  RedCrossPhillyBlog, as well as other platforms. The majority of the time, writers contribute virtually, but there are also in-person opportunities. For instance, Jenny Farley and I covered the 2023 Red Ball Gala, and Judith Weeks recently did a ride-a-long story with Blood Transportation Specialist Bob Duaime.

“In addition to providing the public with preparedness and safety information, I’m especially proud of our storytelling pieces – profiles of blood donors and recipients, volunteers, and residents impacted by home fires,” says Alana, who manages the team’s volunteers.

Volunteer Terri Seydel serves as the team’s Blog Lead. Of her many assets, she believes her greatest superpower is her curiosity. If you are interested in volunteering but haven’t taken the first jump, read her article about the 8 Career Benefits From Volunteering.

The Photographers are visual storytellers who showcase the Red Cross at work by taking photos and video at events, trainings and disaster responses. To view some of their work, check out the Red Cross Philly Albums on Flickr.

“Wherever there’s a Red Cross event or story to be told, we try to get a photographer there,” says Mauger.

Bill Thawley, whose career spans 45 years as a pharmacist, serves the Photography Lead for this team, as well as the Engagement and Volunteer Connection Lead.

Media Relations and Digital Volunteers round out the team. They work with Skutnik and Mauger to stay on top of current Red Cross messaging and generate content for the region’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn pages.

CONTRIBUTE YOUR UNIQUE INTERESTS

Effective communication efforts like these empower the Red Cross. Altogether, the volunteers who fill these roles create a Communications team that is unmatched.

“I’m in awe of our volunteers’ generosity with their time and talents. Our work wouldn’t be possible without them. I learn a lot from them, and I enjoy watching them grow and evolve in their Red Cross experiences” says Mauger, who directly managers the volunteers.

If one of these roles sparks your interest, join the team! You don’t need to be a professional writer or photographer. Mauger cares about getting to know each volunteer so that she can help pair them with stories and photo assignments that match their unique passions. Bringing your own ideas is encouraged as well! Volunteers are always credited for their work, which is a great way to build a portfolio while serving the Red Cross mission. Being part of this team is extra special because they touch every aspect of the mission.
