Ashley Barrett always knew she wanted to pursue a career in health care. After high school, she attended CHI Institute and became a certified phlebotomist and medical assistant. She started her career as a medical assistant in a mental health setting.
“Phlebotomy is a great skill to have. It gives you insight into basic human anatomy. It’s a great first step for someone thinking about going into medicine. And if it’s your last step, it’s still a great career.”
Looking to work in a more clinical environment, she accepted a job as a phlebotomist with the American Red Cross more than 6 years ago.
“As a phlebotomist, I enjoy meeting new people the most. You get to meet a lot of different types of people and learn what motivates them to give blood. It’s nice to get to know their reasoning. It restores my faith in humanity.”
Two years ago, Ashley was promoted to Collections supervisor, a role she relishes because it gives her “the ability to impact change,” something that’s important to her.
Having worked her way up the chain of command, Ashley brings a unique perspective to the role.
“Working your way up in an organization, you can see everyone’s perspective and can help bridge those gaps. It enables you to lead in a different way,” she said.
Ashley met her husband at a Red Cross blood drive (he’s a registered nurse in Clinical Services), and she balances her career with raising 3 children, ages 17, 11 and 10. Plus she’s back in school, working on a health sciences degree from Delaware County Community College.
