March 8th is International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements seeking to accelerate our journey to gender equality.
History of International Women’s Day
In 1911 International Women’s Day was officially observed for the first time with more than a million people attending rallies around the world. They intended to campaign for women’s rights to vote, work and hold public office. That same year, the devastating “Triangle” factory fire in New York City killed more than 140 working women. With the backdrop of growing global insistence for equal rights, this tragic event catapulted awareness of poor working conditions for many women and prompted labor legislation in the United States.
The movement arose at a time when women’s contributions weren’t well recognized even though their efforts were widely impactful. As an example, women like Clara Barton had founded the American Red Cross and helped shape the course of humanitarian efforts globally. She was also one of the first women to work for the US Federal government, paving the way for many more women to follow in her footsteps.
Successes from International Woman’s Day
Over the next century, the movement grew in popularity demonstrating women’s solidarity and celebration of women’s achievements, tirelessly working toward gender equality. In many countries, women have gained the right to vote and work in their chosen field, due in large part to this organization’s widespread efforts. However, there’s still more work needed to bring the same rights to women of all countries and make gender parity a norm.
Continuing the cause for women’s rights and equality
This year’s theme, ‘Break the Bias’, focuses on breaking down barriers and stereotypes while opening more opportunities for women to use their unique talents and amplify their contributions to the world. International Women’s Day challenges us to “ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe, and rewarding.”
