The International Services of the American Red Cross acknowledges January 24 as the International Day of Education. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019, this day is declared to empower all countries to increase their political commitment to education so that all children and youth may receive the benefits of a full education.
Leading the effort each year is the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This year, UNESCO has announced “Changing Course, Transforming Education” as the 2022 theme. This year’s theme provides a powerful message about UNESCO’s mission to contribute to the building of peace and to have an intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. UNESCO asks that we choose education to begin a course towards more justice and sustainability.
Education is a relatable topic for staff and volunteers at the International Services of the Red Cross. In highlighting UNESCO’s International Day of Education, the International Services of the Red Cross supports a shared vision of education and training to strengthen individual efforts for the good of the whole. A cornerstone of the services provided by the International Services of the Red Cross lies in their ability to prioritize training and education. Training and education are valuable to the delivery of quality action and care at pivotal moments.
