Universal Children’s Day is November 20

By Judith Weeks

Universal Children’s Day – established in 1954 by the United Nations and celebrated on November 20 each year – is a special day designated to promote international togetherness and awareness among children worldwide and to improve children’s welfare. The Declaration of the Rights of the Child, adopted by the UN General Assembly, states that the child must be the first to receive relief in times of distress.

The American Red Cross is committed to bringing relief to children

The Red Cross has a long history of supporting humanitarian needs for evacuees and refugees arriving in the U.S. from international conflicts.

In late August, Afghan refugees arrived in Philadelphia International Airport after a long and harrowing experience fleeing their homes. Many families and children arrived with little more than the clothes on their backs. Local Red Cross volunteers were there to greet them and offer essentials for the children, from nourishing meals and snacks to baby care items, such as cribs and diapers.

Disasters are among the most frightening experiences a child can have

Red Cross volunteers comfort children and support families in shelters, providing a safe place to stay before, during and after a disaster.

When a fire disaster occurs, kids are the are most at risk. On average, 7 people die every day from a home fire, most impacting children and the elderly. Red Cross teaches families how to involve children in planning fire safety and preparation.

The Red Cross Pillowcase Project teaches children the skills and confidence they need in an emergency

This education program for grades 3-5, teaches students preparedness and safety skills, local hazards, and basic coping skills. Red Cross volunteers lead students through a “Learn, Practice, Share” framework to engage them in disaster preparedness and survival skills. Upon completion, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which to build their personal emergency supplies kit.
